Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Philanthropic Reading Corner as an effort to enhance cultural literacy, civic literacy, and discipline among children at the Al-Amin Orphanage in Garut. The program focuses on developing literate, responsible, and disciplined character through reading activities and social interaction. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews with caregivers, children, and volunteers, as well as observation of reading corner activities and questionnaires distributed to the children. Data analysis was conducted through three stages of coding open, axial, and selective which produced three main themes: (1) enhancement of cultural literacy through habitual reading and local folklore appreciation; (2) strengthening of civic literacy through book-sharing habits, mutual respect, and responsibility for maintaining the learning environment; and (3) development of discipline through consistent reading routines and adherence to reading corner rules. Questionnaire results show that more than 80% of the children experienced increased reading interest, a stronger sense of responsibility, and improved study discipline. The findings indicate that the implementation of the Philanthropic Reading Corner not only serves as a literacy medium but also as a platform for sustainable character and civic value formation. The program effectively integrates cultural and moral literacy values through contextual and participatory activities, thereby contributing significantly to strengthening a literacy-based character education ecosystem within the orphanage environment.
