Abstract

Digital transformation in the education sector has encouraged Indonesian language instruction to utilize learning resources that integrate technological innovations with local cultural content. Despite this progress, regional literary works are rarely used as audio learning materials, so empirical evidence regarding their contribution to student learning is relatively limited, particularly in the teaching of historical narrative texts. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of monologue podcasts developed from the Babad Menak Sunda in enhancing students’ understanding of historical narrative texts and fostering cultural literacy. A sequential exploratory mixed methods approach was applied by combining qualitative analysis of the intrinsic structure of the literary work and the values of local wisdom with a quasi experimental study involving 70 eleventh grade students from a vocational high school. Normal gain (N-Gain) analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyze data collected from documentation, student response questionnaires, learning outcome tests, and classroom observations. Before being used in the classroom, these learning materials must meet validation criteria set by experts regarding content quality, language, presentation, and instructional design. Based on empirical evaluations, students who learn through monologue podcasts demonstrate a better understanding of historical narrative texts compared to students who participate in traditional text-based lessons. Overall, the results of this study indicate that integrating local literary heritage into digital audio learning materials is an effective method for linking historical literacy with cultural understanding. Therefore, this study expands the current body of evidence on culturally sensitive digital learning by revealing how local literature can serve as both instructional material and a pedagogical resource for studying culture.
