Correction and Retraction

1. Policy Statement

ELTIN Journal: Journal of English Language Teaching in Indonesia, published by IKIP Siliwangi, is committed to maintaining the accuracy, transparency, and integrity of the scholarly record. The journal recognizes its responsibility to correct errors in published articles and to retract articles when serious concerns undermine the reliability or integrity of the published work.

This policy applies to all articles published in ELTIN Journal and is intended to protect readers, authors, researchers, and the wider academic community.

2. Corrections

A correction may be issued when an error is identified in a published article and the error requires a formal notice to maintain the accuracy of the scholarly record.

Corrections may address, but are not limited to:

  • Errors in author names, affiliations, or other publication metadata.
  • Typographical, formatting, or factual errors that affect the interpretation or accuracy of the article.
  • Incorrect figures, tables, references, or other published information.
  • Errors in data presentation or reporting that can be corrected without invalidating the principal findings and conclusions.

Requests for corrections may be submitted by authors, readers, editors, or other concerned parties. The editorial team will assess the reported error and determine whether a correction is necessary.

Published corrections will clearly identify the affected article and describe the nature of the correction. Where appropriate, the original article will be linked to the correction notice.

3. Retraction

Retraction is a formal mechanism used to correct the scholarly record when an article contains serious problems that undermine the reliability, validity, or integrity of its findings.

ELTIN Journal may consider retracting an article when there is credible evidence of:

  • Significant errors or unreliable findings that cannot be adequately addressed through a correction.
  • Plagiarism or substantial unattributed use of another person's work.
  • Fabrication or falsification of research data, results, images, or other evidence.
  • Duplicate or redundant publication that seriously violates publication policies.
  • Serious breaches of research ethics or other forms of publication misconduct.
  • Unlawful or unauthorized use of material where the issue cannot be resolved through a less extensive remedy.
  • Other circumstances in which the integrity of the published article is substantially compromised.

Retraction decisions will be based on an assessment of the available evidence and the seriousness of the concern. Retraction is intended to correct the scholarly record rather than to punish authors.

4. Expression of Concern

When credible concerns have been raised about a published article but the available evidence is insufficient to reach a final conclusion, ELTIN Journal may publish an expression of concern.

An expression of concern informs readers that an investigation is ongoing or that significant questions remain regarding the reliability or integrity of the article.

The notice may be updated or followed by a correction, retraction, or other appropriate editorial action once sufficient evidence becomes available.

5. Procedure for Reporting Errors or Misconduct

Concerns regarding a published article may be submitted to the editorial office by authors, readers, researchers, institutions, or other relevant parties.

Reports should include:

  1. The title and bibliographic details of the article concerned.
  2. A clear description of the suspected error, misconduct, or ethical concern.
  3. Supporting evidence, references, or relevant documentation where available.
  4. Contact information for follow-up communication, where appropriate.

The editorial team will assess the report, request clarification or additional evidence when necessary, and provide the authors concerned with an appropriate opportunity to respond.

Where warranted, the journal may consult independent experts, the publisher, or the relevant research institution. All concerns will be handled fairly, confidentially, and impartially.

6. Editorial Decisions and Actions

Following an assessment, the Editor-in-Chief or an authorized editorial representative will determine the appropriate action based on the available evidence and applicable publication ethics guidance.

Possible actions include:

  • No further action when the concern is not substantiated.
  • Correction of the published article.
  • Publication of an expression of concern.
  • Retraction of the article.
  • Referral to the relevant institution or authority when appropriate.

The journal will document its assessment and communicate the decision to the relevant parties as appropriate.

7. Publication of Correction and Retraction Notices

Correction and retraction notices will be published transparently and linked to the original article whenever technically possible.

A notice should identify the affected article, explain the reason for the action, and indicate the nature of the correction or the grounds for retraction without including unnecessary personal or confidential information.

Retracted articles will remain identifiable in the journal archive, with a clear retraction notice associated with the article, so that readers are informed of its status. The journal will not silently remove or replace a published article merely to conceal a correction or retraction.

The editorial team will take reasonable steps to ensure that the status of the article is clearly communicated to readers and indexing services where applicable.

8. Author Responsibilities

Authors are expected to notify the editorial office promptly if they discover a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work.

Authors must cooperate with the journal's investigation, provide relevant information or supporting evidence, and assist in determining whether a correction, retraction, or other action is appropriate.

Failure to agree with a proposed editorial action does not prevent the journal from taking action when the available evidence justifies it.

9. Appeals

Authors may submit a reasoned appeal if they believe that a correction or retraction decision was based on a significant factual error or a procedural irregularity.

Appeals must include supporting evidence and will be assessed by the Editor-in-Chief or an appropriate editorial representative who is not affected by a relevant conflict of interest.

The journal will consider appeals impartially, but submission of an appeal does not guarantee that the original decision will be reversed.

10. Ethical Guidelines

ELTIN Journal handles corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern in accordance with its publication ethics policies and relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

The journal aims to ensure that all actions are proportionate to the evidence, clearly communicated, and directed toward preserving the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record.
