Abstract

This study aims to describe the social character values contained in the Rewang tradition in the wedding procession of the people of Sungai Sena Village, Silat Hilir District, Kapuas Hulu Regency. The Rewang tradition is a practice of mutual cooperation that involves the active participation of the community in the entire series of wedding activities and is an important medium for the inheritance of local wisdom. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to understand cultural meanings through direct involvement in community activities. The research subjects consisted of 15 informants, namely traditional leaders, community leaders, and community members selected through purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through participatory observation during the wedding procession on September 26-30, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that the Rewang tradition is carried out through three main stages, including the preparation, implementation, and closing stages. Each stage brings out social character values such as tolerance, cooperation, social awareness, responsibility, and togetherness. These values are in line with Erich Fromm's productive orientation, which emphasizes the importance of healthy social relationships, caring, and responsible awareness. Overall, the Rewang tradition plays a role in strengthening social cohesion and preserving the sustainability of local wisdom in Sungai Sena Village.
