Abstract

The continuous development of digital technology in education presents new challenges for EFL teaching, while instruction in many Indonesian junior high schools still focuses on literal comprehension and vocabulary. This highlights the necessity for an instructional approach that integrates digital literacy into critical thinking skills and reading comprehension practices to promote deeper engagement with texts. Accordingly, this study primarily aimed to develop a digital literacy-oriented learning model to improve students’ critical thinking abilities and reading comprehension in EFL classrooms. In addition, it identifies students’ perceptions of the implemented learning model. Therefore, the research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach integrated with a one–group pretest–posttest experimental design involving 25 seventh-grade Junior High School students. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank tests, while qualitative input data were obtained from student perception questionnaires of the learning model. The findings revealed that the developed model was highly feasible based on expert validation. Students’ performance exhibited significant improvement, as reflected by higher posttest scores compared to their pretest performance. Furthermore, students expressed positive perceptions toward the use of digital texts and multimodal learning resources.
